What is fishmeal and why is it used in this recipe?

We'd love to share that we intentionally include fish meal in our dry kibble recipes, as they provide extra nutrition! Fish meal, fish with the water removed, is a concentrated source of amino acids needed for healthy muscles and is a highly concentrated source of animal protein! There are many species of whitefish available. We source primarily hake or the freshest whitefish based on seasonal availability. Our whitefish meal is sustainably sourced and always ocean-caught, never farmed.

We rely on AAFCO guidelines for all our formulation requirements. The protein named in the title of our Recipe makes up at minimum 25% of the recipe per their guidelines!

I am aiming to tackle my dog's itchy skin and loose stools presumably caused by a chicken allergy or intolerance. Would you recommend I try the Salmon or Whitefish recipe first?

We are sorry your pup has been experiencing allergies/skin trouble, we hope to find a solution 😀 If your pup is feeling itchy, I would recommend the Catch-of-the-Season Whitefish Dry Recipe​. It is a single protein recipe - only whitefish - so it is great for dogs with stomach or skin trouble. Fish is also a great source of omegas which help with dry, itchy skin! Our Dry Recipes also have coconut oil to help with skin health as well! I hope this helps!
In the Whitefish and ancient grains dry dog food what does the "natural flavor" consist of ?
Our natural flavor ingredient is dehydrated whitefish that is in a powder form and is preserved with mixed tocopherols (Vitamin E) and a touch of salt! With every bag and recipe at Open Farm, ingredients can be traced back to their source. What process to you use to make your dry kibble? Do you use extrusion?
Our Dry Recipes use minimally processed ingredients that are extremely high quality such as humanely raised meats, ocean caught fresh fish, non-GMO locally sourced vegetables! We cook our Dry Recipes at a lower temperature to preserve its nutrients through the cooking process. We use a twin screw extruder instead of a single screw as this allows for a lower cooking temperature.
